Alopecia (hairloss)
Alopecia (hairloss)
Alopecia refers to hair loss, and it can occur in various forms, affecting both men and women. There are several types of alopecia, each with distinct causes and patterns of hair loss:.
1. Alopecia Areata
This is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss in small, round patches. It can affect hair on the scalp, face, and other areas of the body. Alopecia areata can vary in severity, and hair may grow back on its own in some cases, though it can also recur.
2. Androgenetic Alopecia (Male or Female Pattern Baldness) This is the most common type of hair loss, typically linked to genetics and hormones. In men, it often leads to a receding hairline and thinning on the crown, while in women, it tends to result in diffuse thinning across the scalp. This type of hair loss usually progresses gradually over time.
3. Alopecia Totalis A more severe form of alopecia areata, alopecia totalis causes complete hair loss on the scalp. In some cases, it can also progress to alopecia universalis, which leads to total body hair loss.
4. Telogen Effluvium This type of hair loss is caused by a disruption in the hair growth cycle, often triggered by stress, illness, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or menopause), medications, or nutritional deficiencies. It typically causes temporary thinning of hair and usually resolves once the underlying issue is addressed.
5. Traction Alopecia This type of hair loss is caused by excessive tension or pulling on the hair, often from tight hairstyles such as braids, ponytails, or buns. If not addressed, traction alopecia can lead to permanent hair loss in the affected areas.
6. Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia) In this condition, inflammation damages hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue, leading to permanent hair loss. It can be caused by various skin conditions, such as lupus, lichen planus, or fungal infections.
